 Choosing a School

There are manythings to considerwhen choosing theeducational programthat's right for you. Consider your options and make an informed decision.

Program and/or School Type

It’s easiest to choose the school and program of study you need if you know what career you want to pursue. Some occupations require specific certifications and training hours, while others may require advanced degrees. If you know what degree you need, you can narrow your list of choices. The best preparation for a specific career can be:

  • an apprenticeship program
  • a vocational, trade, or career school
  • a two-year or community college
  • a four-year college or university
  • a graduate or professional school

Verify that the schoolyou are considering is accredited by a reputable organization, and isauthorized to operate in its state.

Alaska or Outside?

If you're re-entering the workforce after a long absence, you may have other important commitments besides school. Do you need to remain in Alaska, or can you leave the state to pursue education elsewhere? Knowing this will help narrow your list of choices.

Work and Life Balance

If you have other commitments in life, you need to consider how well the school fits into your life balance. Schools may offer structured part-time study programs, evening and weekend classes, and distance education. Some schools have on-campus childcare centers, and some even offer dormitory housing for single parents. Research what is offered to help adults returning to school, sometimes referred to as non-traditional students, at schools that you are considering.

Cost and Funding

Realistically evaluate your costs and resources before choosing a school. Find out how much attendance will cost, and what financial aid is available at each school.Consider how much savings you have to pay for some costs.Compare aid packages and choose the school that best fits your budget and educational needs.
